Larry Locke

"I was like 12 or 13 [when I came out]. I thought that the problem was that everybody around me didn't like gay people because they hadn't met any and if I just told them, they'd be like 'oh, well Larry's a decent human being, I guess my view on the subject was wrong' and change their mind and that was not the case...all the other gay people that I [was] in high school with avoided me like the plague because to be seen with me was to be outed. So I ended up finding role models and...not peers, but other gay people that shouldn't have been friends with 13 year-olds."
